The Archaeological Museum

 

  The museum is housed in the Venetian Church of San Francesco and exhibits important finds dating from the Neolithic and Minoan periods to the late Roman one. Those finds have been excavated from the region of Chania and western Crete. The most important part of the exhibition are a collection of vases and weapons from the Minoan necropolis.

The museum is located on 21, Halidon Street.

Opening hours: Tuesday- Friday 8 am to 7 pm, Saturday- Sunday 8.30 am to 3 pm and closed on Monday.

The Nautical Museum

 

  This museum is located on the north-east end of the Venetian harbour (in the town of Chania), in a building of the Firkas Fortress, and houses a collection of models of ships from antiquity to modern times and a collection of relics from the historic battles of the Greek Navy such as war guns, portraits of important Greek admirals and navigation equipment.

The museum also exhibits a collection of rare shells.

Byzantine and post-Byzantine Collection

 

   This collection is housed in a building located on Theotokopoulou Street (number 82) in the town of Chania. Various mosaics, wall-paintings, sculptures, funerary inscriptions, icons, ceramics and objects of arts are composing the collection.

Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 8.30 am to 3 pm.

The Historical Archives and Museum of Crete

 

   This museum is located on Sfakianaki Street (number 20), in the town of Chania and is housed in a wonderful neoclassical building. It exhibits a rich collection of folklore and material related to the history of the island such as historic documents, maps, coins, religious vessels, pictures, etc... There are the second largest archives of Greece after the General Archives of the Greek State.
A room in the museum has been dedicated to Eleftherios Venizelos where personal objects and mementos of the great statesman.

 

 
 
The War Museum

 

   Located in the town of Chania it contains rare pictures and various other historical items from the revolution of Crete against the Turks, from the Balkanian Wars, the Macedonian War (1903- 1908) and from the destruction of the Greek part of Asia as well as memorabilia from World War II and the Battle of Crete (1941- 1945).
