Location

Santorini

...One simple word that brings to mind images of unprecedented beauty. Nowhere else in the world is there such an impressive and magical combination of landscapes: the mysterious volcano and the golden sunset that sinks into the blue Aegean waters, the colorful beaches that are surrounded by high cliffs made of volcanic rock, bright white houses carved into the reddish cliff side, and dominating ancient monuments are evidence of one of the most significant civilizations in history.

On this page, you are provided with travel information about Santorini sightseeing, activities and beaches.

Santorini History

Santorini is one of the most exciting destinations in the world, attracting thousands of visitors every year. During ancient times, Santorini was an important cultural center of Greece, and the many different tribes and peoples settling on the island had changed its name many times, from ‘Kallisti’ (the beautiful one) and ‘Strogili’ (the round one) to ‘ Thira’ and finally ‘Santorini’. The history of the island is closely connected with volcanic activity in the area. In Prehistoric Times, in the 17 th century BC, a violent volcanic eruption occurred, altering the shape and morphology of Santorini forever and creating the impressive natural features that we admire today. Nowadays, the island goes by the name ‘Santorini’, baptized so during the Venetian Rule after the Church of Santa Irene.

Santorini Sightseeing & Touring

Due to its rich history, Santorini provides visitors with some amazing archaeological and historical sites. We first recommend visiting the Prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri, which is very well-preserved as it was buried under lava and ash for centuries. Some archaeologists believe that Akrotiri is connected to the Lost Continent of Atlantis.

It is also worth visiting the wonderful monasteries and churches scattered throughout the island, as well as the Archaeological, Folklore and Prehistoric Thira Museums in Fira, and the Maritime Museum in Oia.

A wonderful touring activity is a day trip by boat to the volcanic islets of Nea Kameni, Palea Kameni and Thirassia, which are situated opposite Santorini, to swim in the hot springs of the area.

Santorini Cuisine

A most enjoyable feature of Santorini Island is its cuisine. Santorini is celebrated for its tasty delicacies, such as fava (split-pea dip), fried white aubergines, tomato balls, courgette balls, baked kalamari, and sun-dried tomatoes which can be sampled at the traditional taverns and restaurants throughout.

Hiking paths

The existence of the prehistoric civilization on the island left great legacy in the country and the people. Many recorded tracks on the slopes or cliffs of the caldera reveal unique points of historical value and unique beauty. These points are only accessible on foot.

We suggest you:

1.Route from Kamari to Ancient Thira & Zoodocho Pigi church (2 hours)
2. Route from Kamari to Prophet Elijah (Monastery) (3 hours)
3. Route from Fira to Oia (3hours)

For the lovers of diving, Santorini has to offer unique experiences that are hard to find on other the Greek islands.

Wrecks
within walking distance from the caldera volcanoes, you can find 4 wrecks, more specifically 3 ships and a tug. Each one of them is waiting for you to narrate his own story …

Aspronisi

A surprise for the friends who will visit the small island of the caldera. At a depth of four meters, starts a wall, following which it will lead you to 70 meters depth and after forming a stair, continues its downward trend and gets lost once it reaches 250 meters.
Lava Caves

A magical undersea landscape of lava caves. These caves, unsurprisingly, attracted the interest of all known explorer, Jacques Cousteau I. Today, at the entrance of a cave, visitors can see a plaque tribute, which he placed from the son Cousteau in honor of his father.

Organised Beaches

From the exclusive Red Beach to the family beach Monolithos and from the cosmopolitan Perivolos to touristic Kamari and Perissa, Santorini offers a great number of exceptional organised beaches.

Kamari

The heart of the touristic Santorini.

What to meet: A beach awarded with two E.U. blue flags, well-organised, with a lifeguard and plenty of room for lying free on the sand. In the northern part of the beach, the sea has slippery slabs. For the more adventurous and risky ones, the best place for diving is at Kamari towards the hill of Prophitis Ilias. But always with great caution!

Tips: The best thing to do in Kamari is inquire at Ancient Thera Tours and follow an organised sightseeing tour to Ancient Thera. Also note that walking up the hill of Profitis Ilias and following the path, you will reach the chapel of Zoodohos Pigi, where there is a spring with running water. Here you are very close to the location of Ancient Thera.

Red Beach (Kokkini Paralia)

The most impressive of all beaches in Santorini; the definition of a volcano beach. Its name reveals its colour.

Monolithos

If you have a family with small children, the Monolithos beach is your ideal destination. As a result of its shallow waters, big waves do not reach the beach.

Vlyhada

The volcano white rocks in Vlyhada remind us of a moon landscape. It is one of the most beautiful and best organised beaches in Santorini. Ideal for those who do not like the hubbub of crowded places and are interested in simply swimming and lying in the sun.

Agios Georgios - Perivolos

Amazing waters, black sand and crystal clear waters; the ideal beach for safe diving and long sunbathing lying in comfortable deckchairs while listening to summer music. There is a lifeguard on the beach.

Perissa

The natural “extension” of Perivolos, awarded with the E.U. blue flag, stretching up to the imposing white rock at the end of the beach. Ideal for water sports.

The more adventurous can dive from the rocks at the end of the beach (the area is called Kolada).

Exo Gialos

The closest beach to Fira and the smallest beach with amenities on the island: black sand, quite deep waters, only a few beach chairs for couples and visitors seeking calmness and tranquility.

Off Road

Endless indeed is the list of the beaches in Santorini which may not be organised but which offer abundantly their natural beauty, tranquillity, virginity and crystal clear sea waters.

Katharos,Ammoudi – Agios Nikolaos,White Beach (Aspri Paralia),Limanakia/Pori,Koloumbos,Mesa Pigadia/Kampia

We suggest :

Visit hot springs of Palaia and Nea kameni
Donkey ride from and to old port of Fira
Wine tours
Sailing around caldera
Sunset cruises
Walk from Fira to Imerovigli and then to Oia
Visit five castles :Skaros Rock, tower of Nimborio, Pyrgos Castle,Oia Castle,Akrotiri Castle & Tower and the traditional settlements of Pyrgos, Emporio , Finikia, Exo Gonia, Vothonas

And go to a local FEST !

Local currency is the Euro and the electrical system is European Standard 220 volt.
Greek is the official language of Santorini, but English is prevalent. French, German, and Spanish are spoken only in large villages.

Distances from Nissia apartments to port : 7km ,to airport:3km,to Fira:9km.
